Colour Map = Object Placement, is it possible?

Hey, just a thought that has been going around in my head but I have no idea if it is possible as Im not sure how to code things.

Could a system be set up that utilised a colour map to distribute different types of asset dependent on the colour e.g. i bring in a map with green areas which would automatically distribute all my tree assets, blue areas which would automatically distribute all my buildings etc etc.

Its merely an interesting thought I had that would be usefull, but im not sure if it is possible. Im really just putting it out their for all the codies to consider!

Any feedback on this system would be appreciated :)

I have in fact written a very similar system for use in gt.
An editor where you can load images or paint areas to be created,
these areas can be used to scatter objects on, based on the color.
You assign what specific thing to do with the selected color, e.g scatter trees , create terrain etc.


I'm gonna couple it with the terraintool that we talked about earlier, to group all these kind
of functions in one place.
